Supernatural Rain In My House–Ask God For Rain! Elijah Was A Man Just Like Us (Part 1)
Scriptures Triggering Miracles
Last week I shared the story of Supernatural Multiplication Of Ham. Today we have the story of some supernatural signs that God gave us to encourage us to believe his promises in scripture about prayer. I am sharing the scriptures and the story, as accurately as I can, to encourage you. This story is also a good illustration of how speaking or meditating on scripture releases God’s supernatural power.
One day I was going to work on a siding job, and on the way I saw a Kay Jewelers’ sign on the highway that said “Pray for Rain! (Your ring might be free).” I knew that this sign wasn’t intentionally pointing to anything scriptural or religious. I was just an advertisement. Later I found out that this was a promotion. If there was so much rain on your wedding day, your ring would be free. (My brother should have gotten his ring there–it poured on his wedding day!) Anyways, what I read on the sign, “pray for rain”, stuck in my mind. I was thinking of scriptures telling us to ask the Lord for rain all day long. These three passages kept running through my mind as I was installing siding:
Hosea 6:3 (NRSV) Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord; his appearing is as sure as the dawn; he will come to us like the showers, like the spring rains that water the earth.”
Zechariah 10:1 (NRSV) Ask rain from the Lord in the season of the spring rain,
from the Lord who makes the storm clouds, who gives showers of rain to you,
the vegetation in the field to everyone.
James 5:16-18 (NRSV) The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
Supernatural Rain In My House
At that time there was a friend staying with me who had previously been involved in a lot of witchcraft, but had become a Christian. I had a few different people live with me after I bought my first house in exchange for them helping me to fix it up.
When I got home from work my friend told me that he just had an encounter with God like he had never experienced before. He had been working in the house and praying. He felt like he needed a lot of answers from God, and was listening to a worship song about asking God for rain. He started to cry out “God send your rain in my life” and it literally started to rain in the house. I asked him more about what the experience was like. He said that he physically felt it falling on him and saw it with his eyes open. Later when he had doubts about his faith he remembered that.
I was amazed because I had been thinking about the scriptures telling us to pray for rain all day long. I went to the youth meeting that night and the first two worship songs were “Let it Rain” by Michael W. Smith and “Rain Down” by Delirious. It was absolutely amazing that I had been thinking about these scriptures all day, then my friend had this experience in my house, and then the worship songs at the youth group were also about rain. God was clearly pointing us to these scriptures about prayer and saying, “It’s true! If you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you…Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete! (John 16:23-24 NRSV) You do not have, because you do not ask. (James 4:2, NRSV)
1 John 5:14-15 (NIV) This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
Elijah Prayed, And It Did Not Rain…
Some time later, my mom had an experience where she was in the midst of a rainstorm and it supernaturally did not rain on her. She went to a Jesuit retreat center to have some time alone with the Lord. She was by herself in an area with picnic tables and picnic benches. The sky got dark, and the storm clouds rolled in. She thought to herself, “Oh, I really need to be here and pray! God, I know you can make it not rain on me. You can do anything! But even if it rains and I get soaking wet, I’m going to stay right here, because I need to pray!”
So she stayed. It got darker and darker. Soon there were puddles on the picnic benches all around her, with rain dripping in them. YET SHE DID NOT GET WET! She had not even prayed an audible prayer, just had a thought.
I have experienced the power of God working before with just a thought. In fact, I was born again and delivered from oppression when I had the God-inspired thought “What is there to be depressed about?”
Both of these experiences together clearly pointed to what scripture says about Elijah. He was a man just like us, but he prayed, and it did not rain for three and a half years. He prayed again, and it rained. These signs from God led me to meditate on a lot of scriptures and share the message in those scriptures along with the stories of these miracles. God was telling us that he wants us to ask, he wants us to believe, and we need to pray for rain. The Lord renewed my focus on these scriptures about prayer.
In part two I share about the the prayer of faith and the story of Elijah, which these supernatural signs pointed us to. Ask God for rain! “Whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” (Mark 11:24, NRSV) God will send rain if you ask! God wants to pour out his rain in abundance on you, on your family, on your city, and on your country. He will if you ask! Meanwhile, here are some scripture to meditate on which talk about rain from heaven:
God’s Rain
Matthew 5:44-46 (NIV) But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
Isaiah 45:8 (NIV) “You heavens above, rain down my righteousness; let the clouds shower it down. Let the earth open wide, let salvation spring up, let righteousness flourish with it; I, the Lord, have created it.
Isaiah 55:10-11 (NIV) As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

The Floodgates of Heaven are Open!
(I love this song, but instead of singing ” open the floodgates of heaven”, I always sing “the floodgates of heaven are open”. This is why.)
